Event Rules
This page describes our general rules. Rules specific to the event will be shared at the event. Any rules shared at the event take precedence over these
general rules.
Race Divisions
- 3-4 Person Coed
- Coed teams of 3 or 4 make our main division more accessible and fun to teams
regardless of their particular scheduling situations. In general a 3 person team may be at an
advantage as compared to a team of 4 due to the 'weakest link in the chain' theory. However, if your team is
like our BMAR team and simply likes to race as a 4 person team, this division is composited.
It is up to you to decide how to compose your team for this division.
- 2 Person Open
- 2 Person Coed
- Solo Male
- Solo Female
- Large Group and Family (4+ open and 5+ coed)
- Similar to the 3-4 person coed division, this division is composited and exists to make the races accessible
and fun to teams. Ever wonder what it would be like to race with a big group of friends? Maybe your whole family? This
division allows you to explore this fun possibility or challenge!
General Race Rules
Our Rules are currently being defined. The following rules are tentative.
Automatic disqualification:
- Not following the Race Rules
- Trespassing on off-limit areas as dictated by the race map
- Separation of the team unless instructed by specific race rules
- Teammates must be within 100 feet of each other at all times
- Use of any electronic navigation device unless instructed by specific race rule
- Use of motorized transportation
- Any intentional littering
- Not assisting a fellow team in danger or grave need
- Assistance from a non-racer in any event
- Assistance from a support crew member (if applicable) outside of transition areas unless instructed by specific race rules
General Rules:
- Navigation:
- Each team recieves a punchcard (a passport) and will visit a series of checkpoints that may be described on a clue sheet. Unless
otherwise instructed in the race rules, you must visit all the checkpoints in order using the mandatory mode of transportation (trekking, biking, paddling, etc.).
Unless otherwise instructed in the race rules, teams use a map and compass to orienteer to the checkpoints. The goal is to collect all the
checkpoints as quickly as possible. Missing a checkpoint may result in a time penalty or by being ranked below teams with more collected checkpoints
depending on the specific race rules.
- Teams:
- All teams must compete in the division in which they registered. If a teammate cannnot continue safely, the rest of the team may continue with fewer members as an
unranked team.
- All original members of each team must check in together at each checkpoint to remain a ranked team.
- All members of each team must remain within 100 feet of each other at all times during the event and must cross the finish line at the same time.
- Teams must follow race instructions and avoid all off-limits areas
- Team members must sign all waivers and be present at any mandatory safety and pre-race meetings in order to participate.
- Where a queue or line up exists (e.g.: waiting to do the ropes course) your entire team must be present and together prior to
queuing.
- Required Gear:
- Teams must carry all required gear throughout the race. Gear checks will be performed on the race course and penalties will be assessed appropriately.
- Gear that is modified in such a way that is deemed non-usable by the race staff will result in an immediate disqualification.
- Helmets must be worn any time a racer is mounted on a mountain bike. Penalites will be assessed.
- At night, all racers must have a red blinking light on the rear of their bike. A white light must be pointed forward as well such as
handle bar lights or a headlamp. Penalties will be assessed.
- In any water event, all racers must properly wear a Coast Guard Approved Type III Personal Flotation Device at all times while on the water. Penalties will be assessed.
- Safety:
- No U.S. law may be broken during the race.
- No illegal drugs shall be used during the event
- Major injuries and medical emergencies take precedence over all rules.
- A Race Director may modify race cut-off times at any time during the course of the race. This is for the safety of the group at large.
- A Race Director or First Aid Attendant may disqualify and bar any individual from continuing that they feel is injured or appears to be in
health risk.
- A Race Volunteer may hold an individual for health reasons until a Certified First Aid Attendant or Race Director arrives to assess
their ability to continue the race. In the event they continue the waiting time will not be credited to the racer.
- Other:
- All racers should conduct themselves with the highest regard for their fellow racers safety.
- All racers and spectators must follow a "Leave-No-Trace" ethic.
- No littering of any kind is allowed. If you see any trash that was left by other teams or litter in any way due to the
event, pick it up!
- Non-team members are not allowed on the course without the approval of the race directors
- Any racers under the age of 18 requires parental consent.
- Minors between the ages of 16-18 may participate only with parental consent form and an approved race resume. Minors under the age of 16 must have both a
parental consent and be accompanied in the race by a parent or approved responsible adult. A "Responsible Adult" will be designated only by the minor's parent(s)
given in writing to Big Mountain Adventure staff.
- The times recorded by the Big Mountain Adventure staff will be the official time. We strive to have final race rankings at the post race party
so that prizes can be distributed at that time. Formal requests or complaints entered within 30 minutes of the completion of the event
will be entertained and after review from the race staff may result in changes to official times.
- Official results of the race will be released within 1 week of the event. Unless the report contains the language 'Final Results' all data is considered tentative.
- Rules may be added or changed at any time prior to the event. Racers are responsible for knowing the rules before the race starts. Rules can be altered during the event
only if the change can be communicated to all participants.
- Big Mountain Adventure, LLC is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged equipment
- Any team that is caught cheating will be disqualified from the event and may be banned from all Big Mountain Adventure events for a minimum of 12 months.
- Race Directors may specify at any time unforseen illegal equipment
- All decisions of the Big Mountain Adventure Staff will be final
- Underlying these rules and adventure racing is sportsmanship and the honor system. Please keep our events honarable.
